GrandOrgue No Sound? Fix It Here
You loaded an organ, pressed a key, and heard… nothing. A silent GrandOrgue is almost always a settings issue rather than a broken installation. Work through the checks below in order — most people get sound back within five minutes.
1. The 60-Second Checks
Before touching any advanced settings, rule out the basics:
- GrandOrgue’s own volume. Check the master volume slider in the main GrandOrgue window — it is easy to leave it at zero after experimenting.
- Your system volume. On Windows, open the Volume Mixer and make sure GrandOrgue (or your output device) is not muted. On macOS, check System Settings > Sound for the correct output.
- The hardware itself. Confirm your speakers or headphones are plugged in, powered on, and working — play a video in your browser. If that is silent too, the problem is not GrandOrgue.
2. Select the Correct Audio Output in GrandOrgue
The single most common cause of silence is GrandOrgue sending audio to the wrong device. Open Settings > Audio Settings and look at the output device list. If you use a USB audio interface or USB headphones, select that device explicitly instead of “Default” — the default can silently point at a disconnected or disabled device. After changing the device, press a key again; if nothing happens, restart GrandOrgue so the audio engine re-initialises cleanly.
3. On Windows: Switch to ASIO
Windows’ default shared-mode audio (DirectSound/WASAPI) is convenient but fragile: other applications can grab the device, and latency is high. For reliable sound:
- If your audio interface ships a native ASIO driver, install it and select ASIO as the audio driver in GrandOrgue’s audio settings.
- No native driver? Install ASIO4ALL (free). It wraps your existing sound hardware and gives GrandOrgue a stable, low-latency audio path.
- macOS and Linux users can usually stay on the defaults (CoreAudio on Mac, ALSA on Linux) — ASIO is a Windows-only concern.
4. Check for Exclusive-Mode Conflicts
On Windows, if a browser tab, video call, or DAW is holding your audio device in exclusive mode, GrandOrgue may receive silence even though everything looks correct. Close other audio applications and try again. For a permanent fix, open Windows Sound settings, find your playback device, go to Properties > Advanced, and test with “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” turned off.
5. Make Sure the Sample Set Finished Loading
The first time you load an organ, GrandOrgue converts the samples and writes a cache file — on large instruments this takes several minutes, and the interface can look ready before audio actually is. Wait until all loading progress indicators have completely disappeared. Also check that at least one stop is drawn (engaged): with no stops selected, silence is normal organ behaviour, not a bug.
6. Still Silent? Isolate the Problem
- Switch the output back to your built-in speakers. If sound appears, the issue is your interface or headphone configuration — not GrandOrgue.
- Reinstall or update your audio driver, and try a different USB port for USB devices.
- As a last resort, reinstall GrandOrgue itself. Your sample sets live in their own folders and survive a reinstall — but back up anything custom first.
Frequently Asked Questions
GrandOrgue loads the organ but produces no sound. What is the most common cause?
A wrong output device selected in Settings > Audio Settings. GrandOrgue may be playing happily into a disconnected device while your speakers sit idle. Select your actual speakers, headphones, or interface explicitly.
Do I need ASIO4ALL?
Only on Windows, and only if your audio hardware has no native ASIO driver. macOS (CoreAudio) and Linux (ALSA) users do not need it. ASIO4ALL is free and solves a whole class of Windows audio-routing problems, so it is worth trying before anything drastic.
Sound works in other apps but not in GrandOrgue. Why?
Other apps follow the system default device; GrandOrgue uses whatever is configured in its own audio settings, and it is sensitive to exclusive-mode conflicts. Check the output device selection first, then close other audio apps.
I hear sound through speakers but not through my headphones.
Your headphones are almost certainly a separate audio device (especially USB or Bluetooth models). Select them explicitly in GrandOrgue’s audio settings rather than relying on “Default”.
